About the GMC General

Introduced for the 1977 model year, the GMC General represented GMC's entry into the heavy-duty conventional truck market of the period. Its large rectangular grille, long hood, and substantial highway-tractor proportions gave the General a commanding appearance that remains instantly recognizable to classic truck enthusiasts.

The General shared its basic platform with Chevrolet's heavy-duty Bison and was offered in numerous configurations for demanding commercial applications. GMC continued production into the late 1980s, making the General an important part of an era when American highways were dominated by large conventional tractors from GMC, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, Freightliner, and other major manufacturers.
