The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker was developed from Boeing's Model 367-80 jet transport prototype and entered U.S. Air Force service in the 1950s. Its primary mission is aerial refueling, allowing military aircraft to receive fuel while in flight and dramatically extending their operational range and endurance.

The later KC-135R modernization replaced the aircraft's original engines with more efficient CFM56 turbofan engines. The upgrade improved fuel efficiency, reduced noise, increased performance, and helped extend the useful life of a tanker fleet that has remained an important component of American air mobility for decades.

The Utah Air National Guard's 151st Air Refueling Wing, based at Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base in Salt Lake City, operates the KC-135 as part of its aerial-refueling mission.
