Did You Know?
The McDonnell Douglas MD-90 was developed as an advanced member of the successful MD-80 family and entered airline service during the 1990s. One of its most important changes was the adoption of International Aero Engines V2500 turbofan engines, helping distinguish the MD-90 from its MD-80 predecessors.
Saudia became an important MD-90 operator, using the aircraft extensively on domestic and regional services. Aircraft such as HZ-API therefore represent an interesting period when Saudi Arabia's air transportation network was expanding alongside increasing business, tourism, and pilgrimage travel.
The MD-90 also occupies a fascinating place in aviation history because it became one of the final major developments of the classic Douglas twin-engine airliner lineage. Following Boeing's merger with McDonnell Douglas in 1997, MD-90 production eventually ended, making surviving models of the aircraft particularly interesting representations of the closing years of the McDonnell Douglas commercial-aircraft era.
