Did You Know?
The 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed the “Screaming Eagles,” was activated in 1942 and became one of the best-known American airborne divisions of World War II.
The division participated in several major European campaigns. During the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944, 101st Airborne paratroopers were dropped behind the Normandy beaches to help secure roads, bridges and other strategic positions supporting the Allied landings.
Later that year, elements of the division participated in Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands. The 101st also became famous for its defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944–45.
Those campaigns have made the 101st Airborne a particularly popular subject for military historians, model builders and WWII diorama collectors.
