The character was originally known as Momonga, the guild master of Ainz Ooal Gown in the virtual game YGGDRASIL. After finding himself within a world resembling the game, he adopts the guild's name as his own.

Ainz rules the Great Tomb of Nazarick, whose inhabitants regard him as their supreme ruler. His skeletal appearance and elaborate robes have become defining visual characteristics of the character.
