How Many Teeth Did a T. rex Have? | Did You Know?

Did you know that Tyrannosaurus rex had about 60 teeth—and those teeth were built to do much more than simply bite?

With its enormous skull, powerful jaws, and rows of serrated teeth, Tyrannosaurus rex had one of the most formidable mouths in the prehistoric world. Some of its teeth could reach extraordinary lengths when the root hidden inside the jaw is included.

But the really fascinating part isn't just how big T. rex teeth were.

It's what they could do.

Built for a Powerful Bite

T. rex didn't have teeth like ours. Its teeth were thick, strong, slightly curved, and serrated—features that helped them puncture, grip, pull, tear, and break apart food. Smithsonian educational material describes T. rex teeth as being suited to several different jobs during feeding.

Unlike animals that chew and grind their food, T. rex could tear off pieces and swallow chunks. The American Museum of Natural History notes that its sharp, serrated teeth provide important clues about how this giant carnivore ate.

A Bite Strong Enough to Crush Bone

Those impressive teeth were backed by tremendous jaw power.

Scientific research estimates that T. rex could generate forces capable of deeply damaging and fragmenting bone. Researchers have concluded that its combination of enormous bite force, tooth shape, and repeated biting allowed T. rex to pulverize bone while feeding.

That ability gave T. rex access to something many predators couldn't easily reach: the nutritious material inside bones.

And scientists have discovered some remarkable evidence that it really did eat them.

How Do Scientists Know What T. rex Ate?

Paleontologists are detectives of the prehistoric world.

They examine fossilized teeth, skeletons, bite marks—and even fossilized waste, called coprolites.

One large coprolite attributed to a huge carnivorous dinosaur contained an extraordinary amount of fragmented bone. Researchers found that roughly 30–50% of the specimen consisted of bone fragments, providing direct evidence that a large tyrannosaur could crush and digest bone.

Scientists have also discovered T. rex tooth marks on fossils of dinosaurs including Triceratops and Edmontosaurus.

Every fossil clue helps scientists reconstruct a world that disappeared around 66 million years ago.

T. rex didn't keep the same teeth for its entire life.

Like other dinosaurs and reptiles, T. rex could lose worn or broken teeth and grow replacements. And most of each tooth wasn't actually visible—the root extended deep into the jaw, helping anchor the tooth against the tremendous forces generated while feeding.

So losing a tooth wasn't quite the disaster it would be for us!
