Did You Know?
The Super Beetle joined Volkswagen's Beetle lineup for the 1971 model year and featured significant changes beneath its familiar shape. Among the most important was a new MacPherson-strut front suspension, which allowed Volkswagen to increase front luggage space while improving the car's handling.
By 1975, the Super Beetle sedan was nearing the end of its production run, but the Super Beetle Convertible continued for several more years, becoming the final version of the original German-built Beetle sold in the United States.
That makes this 1975 convertible an interesting miniature of a transitional period in Volkswagen Beetle history, while Johnny Lightning's Gulf Oil treatment gives the familiar VW an entirely different personality.
